Saika Kunieda

Saika Kunieda

Itsuka ame ga furu youni

Compilation of bittersweet one-shots where each deals with different kinds of trauma and healing. The mangaka’s ability to create poignant drama with low-key but likable characters is truly exceptional. She can portray unique couples such as an ex-yakuza and a boy with memory-loss, a split-personality teenager and a friend who is attracted to him, a couple of childhood acquaintances who keep bumping into each other every few years and end up having sex every time but never actually define their relationship to each other, or a businessman who seduces his sister’s ex-boyfriend who doesn’t remember him so well–similar to Yamada Yugi’s who is another favorite mangaka of mine. If you like stories about complex relationship with tangible plot to grasp onto, definitely give this one a try.

Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin
Rurouni Kenshin. Review Perhaps the astonishing thing about Rurouni Kenshin’s consistently strong following over the years is that the series is staggeringly inconsistent. For the first thirty episodes, it’s quite possible that I watched the same cliché on repeat. Some glory-hunting thugs or...
