In the year 2010 AD, Hyper Hurricanes born concurrently all over the world caused severe damage. Five billion people lost their lives, decreasing the world’s population to 3 billion. Existing economies and militaries were wiped out. Countries were frozen under solid ice, plains sank beneath seas, the world was changed dramatically.

Human civilization enters a chaotic era. Poverty flourished outside of these ecomomic zones and slums were widespread. The ruling class called themselves Logos and maintained their position by force of arms. They call the poor Revenus, who are exiled to live outside the special economic areas.

Time has passed since then. Katsuragi Jo and Tsurasawa Jin, escape from Phantom, a force organised to watch Revenus and to suppress renegade elements of the Logos, taking with them a mysterious girl, Noto Sana. There are many who are interested in her, all with their own reasons.

After the world population and economy is devastated by simultaneous hyper-hurricanes, many different factions and fledgling nations appear. In Japan, an elite class called Logos appears, controlling special zones in the country which have most of the wealth and resources. The Logos exercise control over the Levinas, the lower class which struggles day to day in order to stay alive. The Levinas are restricted from entering the special zones, causing tension which creates a resistance group which fights back against the Logos.

With the tagline "A Near Future Late-Shogunate Action Animation", the story draws analogies with 19th Century Japan at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate period, just before the Boshin War. Jō and Jin escape from Phantom, an elite military group which is used to control the Levinas. When they escape, they take a young girl named Sana with them. The series follows them as they work to avoid being caught by Phantom and the regular military forces of the Logos.

Main characters

Sana Nobuto

Sana is a mysterious girl with no memory of her past. She is protected by Jo and Jin as they attempt to run away from the military and government. Sana is very attached to Jin, thought slightly afraid of Jo.

Though Jin and Jo are deserters from the elite "Phantom" unit in the Logos military, Phantom is more interested in retrieving Sana than they are of punishing Jin and Jo or retrieving the stolen equipment.

Joe Katsuragi

A young dark-haired man of few words and absolutely deadly combat abilities. Unarmed, in a Light Warrior suit, or piloting his Gladiator mech, Jo takes out the enemy with alarming ease. After piloting a

gladiator tears stream down his face, something he regards as almost like a side-effect. While in Phantom Jo worked as Jin’s partner. Because many of Jo’s partners in the past had feared him or been killed trying to match him, Jo developed loyalty towards Jin for having stuck with him. When Jin deserted Phantom, Jo followed. Jo fiercely protects Jin, however despite initial beliefs, Jo also cares for Sana more than he lets on.

Jin Tsurasawa

A young white-haired man, Jin worked as Jo’s partner while in Phantom. After rescuing Sana and deserting Phantom, Jin acted as the leader of the group, protecting Sana and directing Jo. While he isn’t seen using his gladiator as frequently as Jo, Jin is also a fierce warrior and is equally as willing to fight off their enemies and protect Sana. Jin is charming and ambitious, and almost fatherly to Sana.

The Ishin Pirates

Toraji Shiba

The flashy and over-the-top leader of the pirates and captain of the Ishin. He wears the most amazing pirate garb, and a kimono tied the wrong way. Underneath the outlandish character, he is deadly in combat. He’s got a past connection to Phantom and knows way more than he’s letting on.

Hijin

Shiba’s Second-in-Command, she’s a tough looking woman who means business, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t be polite to guests. Shiba has an annoying habit of calling her "Oryo" and her corrections are to no avail.
