Japanese specific references In the Gintama series, most, if not all, episodes/chapters mentions or illustrates a different anime/manga, or a specific Japanese event or person. It also breaks the fourth wall in more than one occasion.
In the first episode of the anime, there is a section that explains how to correctly pronounce the title. This is because “Gintama” is written in hiragana as ????. The pun of the title occurs if the reader forgets the dakuten in the ? and pronounces it as “kintama” (??), which is a Japanese euphemism for testicles (literally “golden balls”). In an omake, a theoretical x-rated “Kintama” is shown with a blonde Gintoki. In an omake the author stated that he wanted schoolgirls to be able to say “Did you see this week’s Gintama?” comfortably. Seppuku is a ritual suicide by disembowelment. It is often used in this manga, especially during the Shinsengumi chapters. Shinsengumi in Gintama is identical in romaji, but different in Japanese kanji to the original version; the real life kanji is ???, while the Gintama version is ???. The anime makes references to another manga, Bleach. Gintoki says, “I wish I had something like bankai” while reading Jump. The end of the Gintama JUMP Festa 2005 shows Gintoki cosplaying Ichigo Kurosaki, Shinpachi as Ury? Ishida, Kagura as Rukia Kuchiki, and Sadaharu as Kon. In chapter 150, the spirit of Gintoki’s bokuto, Touyako (bearing uncanny resemblance to Bleach’s Zangetsu) appeared in front of the main characters in order to teach them an ultimate technique. The third opening sequence also contains Gintoki’s dream of having a bankai.
In episode 5, you will find one Shinsengumi’s officers, the Badminton-loving Yamazaki, wearing a Seigaku uniform as well as the cap of Ryoma Echizen. This is a reference to Prince of Tennis.
Another reference to the manga One Piece is made in Chapter 14 of the manga, when Gintoki and Katsura are dressed up as space pirates. They mention their great desire to search for the great treasure, “One Park”.
In the manga, and now the anime as well, whenever Katsura and Gintoki are cosplaying as Space Pirates, they would always wear long coats with a red ream, with Katsura wearing an eyepatch over one of his eyes. This is a reference to Space Pirate Captain Harlock.
At the end of Episode 13, Katsura is shown saying “Dattebayo”, which is a reference to Naruto. Gintoki dresses as Sena Kobayakawa from Eyeshield 21 in episode 15.
Also in Episode 15, Gintoki wears a hockey mask similar to “Jason Vorhees” from “Friday the 13th”. Kondo Isao’s sword is named Kotetsu, just like the sword which the historical Kondo Isami was said to have used. The kanji however differs: Kondo Isami’s was ?? while the one in Gintama is ??.
The sword was broken in episode 17, to Kondo’s horror, as he was still paying the installments for the sword.
In Episode 17, there are two robots that resemble the Zaku and the original Gundam. There is also one resembling Mazinger Z.
At the end of Episode 17 Gin does an imitation Of Bo-bobo. A kappa-like character appears in episode 21, and chapter 17.
In episode 18, Kagura appears in a yellow jumpsuit that resembles the one worn by Bruce Lee in Game of Death. The way the Underwear Thief is defeated is a parody to the way that Raoh dies in Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken).
At the very beginning of episode 19 in Gintoki’s teacher segment, he’s asked why he always wears the same kimono. He explains that it’d be too distracting if the main character keeps changing outfits and compares himself to Lupin who is always wearing the same suit.
In Episode 21, when Gintoki is rushing somewhere to get a fan, a car was getting in the way, and Gintoki jumped off his bike and did a “Rider Kick” through the car. This is a reference to Kamen Rider.
Episode 25 is a parody of Death Note; Shinpachi plays a role similar to Light Yagami and Gintoki plays a role similar to L. Ryuk also appears on the roof of their building during the last scene.
Also in episode 25, Kagura tells Gintoki that he is corrupting her and that she cannot trust anyone because of him. Gintoki tells her then that she should “despise and detest” him. Their conversation is a reference to the Uchiha brothers in Naruto.
The doctor in episode 31 resembles Black Jack.
Episode 34 is a parody of Densha Otoko (The Train Man), where Shinpachi saves a girl being harassed by a drunkard on a train.
In Episode 39, there is a ramen restaurant called Hokuto Shinken. A clear reference to Hokuto no Ken. Chapter 147 is a parody of the Wii launch, in which various characters are waiting in line for a “Owee” and causes trouble to advance through the line. Katsura also cosplayed Mario in the end of the chapter.
In chapter 148, Katsura is seen eating a mushroom, with Elizabeth cosplaying Luigi.

In episode 65, Okita has glowing purple eyes and asks, “Is it okay if I beat you now? I can’t hear your answer.” This is a reference to Ryuutaros from Kamen Rider Den-O, who has this catchphrase and glowing purple eyes when possessing the protagonist Ryoutarou. Kenichi Suzumura, Okita’s voice actor, also voices Ryuutaros.
At the beginning of Episode 66, Gintoki is shown saying “Dattebayo”, while he?s reading Jump which has Naruto in the cover, which is a reference to Naruto.
The ending of episode 74 has a cameo of Ryotsu Kankichi, the lead character of the Jump series Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari K?en-mae Hashutsujo. (also known as Kochi Kame) The chapter this episode was based off of also has a Ryotsu cameo, due to the 30th anniversary of Kochi Kame in that Jump issue (where all series had a cameo by the lazy policeman).

In Chapter 149, the characters continue their attempt to obtain a “Owee” in a competition with a RPG game.
In Episode 43, Ayame describes Otose and adds “…You can’t even tell if she’s Orochimaru or not,” referring to Otose’s seiyuu who is also the seiyuu of Orochimaru from Naruto.
In Episode 43, when they dress up in the ninja outfits, they reference the original Power Rangers, or Zyuranger in Japanese.
In Episode 44, there is a pose made by the Yorozuka, Sa-chan and Katsura. Below there is a mix between the kanjis of Gintama and Shippuden, reading that Gintama Shippuden. Obvious parody of Naruto Shippuden.
In Episode 44, one of the 3 enemy ninjas uses a Bunshin Replication technique. The yellow ninja’s muscle gain is a possible reference to Hokuto no Ken, for he resembles Raoh when powered up.
Gintoki dressed up as Sena Kobayakawa aka Eyeshield 21 at episode 15
In Episode 47, Gintoki and Kagura dress up as Lone Wolf and Cub while pretending to be streetcrossers.
Also in Episode 47, Gintoki has a new neighbor called Hedoro (means sludge), a parody of Miyazaki’s Totoro.
Episode 50 parodies various anime, manga and movies, including Mobile Suit Gundam, Dragon Ball, Bleach, One Piece, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pretty Cure, Once upon a time in China and Star Wars. Sakamoto’s ship resembles the Space Battleship Yamato.
A parody of Doraemon in episode 45 when Gintoki’s hand became of that Doraemon and his voice is altered as trying to be mechanic or robotic
Kenpachi Zaraki, the character from Bleach mentioned in episode 62 after the Benizakura Arc.
A Dragon Ball Z parody at the 100th episode of Gintama where The Yorozuya team dressed as Goku, Krillin and Gohan, Hijikata cosplays as Vejita, Katsura/Zura as Yamcha, Prince Hata as Piccolo and Gengai Hiraga as Muten Roshi
A suck-up parody of PrettyCure was made by Otose and Catherine at episode 50
an amalgam of famous Shonen Jump animes makes a gag. In respect of its fonts, it parodies Dragon Ball Z, One Piece and Bleach at episode 50.
The Scenery of Soul Society is seen at Otae-san’s improvement as a parody of Bleach in the 50th episode.
Also in Chapter 148, the Dreamcast is mentioned.
Also in Episode 44, when Gintoki and Hattori are fighting they are shown attempting to imitate the Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken. Though Gintoki is performing the pose right while Hattori is imitating another type of dance/pose.
A suck-up gag parody of Rocky theme at episode 71
In episode 30, Gintoki is mimicking Kogorou Mouri and how he hold his bow are parodying Detective Conan or Case Closed
Seigaku (Inui, Kikumaru, Oishi, Kaidoh and Tezuka) and Hyotei Regulars (Atobe, Ohtori, Shishido and Oshitari)
made their cameos at Episode 62. Also Yamazaki uses the famous ‘madamada dane’ speech like Ryoma Echizen, which both of them a parody of Tenipuri or simply Prince of Tennis
Gintoki and Katsura cosplays as Captain Herlock while recruiting them as a wannabe pirates in Episode 13
One park may refer as Oda Eiichirou’s One Piece. Hence it is a parody
at the end of Episode 13, we saw that Katsura said ‘-dattebayo’ is a reference of Naruto’s famous catchphrase
Pay attention of the logo in Episode 44, Although it parodies the Ninja Sentai Hurricanger, The Label of Gintama adds the kanji of ‘Shippuuden’ is actually a parody of Naruto Shippuuden
Otae-san unleashes the fury of ‘Dempsey Roll’ on Kondou-san is a parody of Hajime no Ippo/Fighting Spirit/Knockout in Episode 28
It is revealed in episode 52 that he is 38 years old after he pees his pants. It is possible that he is modeled after Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion as they look alike and their voice actor is the same. Hasegawa has
struck Gendo’s famous pose in episode 43. The same as Kirisaki Yuuichi from Yakitate Japan has the same pose and his look. Coincidentally, Fumihiko Tachiki DID took the role of these three
Nabeleon or Emperor of the Hot Pot is the amalgamated word of Nabe (Hot Pot) and Napoleon (Napoleon Bonaparte) minus the Napo- on it
BAKATSUKI is a gag form of the Most notorious S-class criminals known as Akatsuki. Instead of red cloud in their uniforms, it is mainly of pink manure with toilet papers on. Take note it is found on Episode 100
In Episode 54 What Gintoki said about ‘Just Do It’ is a reference of NIKE shoes
While Sa-chan said about Otose as Orochimaru inside of the old hag, she slithers her tongue in a snake-like manner. Probably a reference of Otose and Orochimaru shares the same seiyuu
Gintoki yells ‘KOBAYASHI!” in Sa-chan’s improvement refers to Sa-chan’s seiyuu, Yu Kobayashi
Sougo’s facial disfigurement like in a horror film is a Parody of ‘Ju-on’ or ‘The Grudge’
Gintoki wished that he had a Bankai is a reference of Bleach in episodes 1 and 2
Daisuke Sakaguchi, Shinpachi’s seiyuu, strongly resembles Shinpachi. The resemblance is so uncanny that Sorachi calls him “Real Shinpachi”.
Jackie Chan (AKA Dragon Taichou) appears as a cameo at episode 100
Touyako or the Lake Touya persona in episode 89 is the parody of Zangetsu, the spirit of Ichigo Kurosaki’s Zanpakutou respectively
The Goddess in episode 89 is also a parody of Orihime Inoue from Bleach
Ayumu (Aya) Toujou, Sui (Yui) Minamito, Tsukamu (Tsukasa) Nishino and Itsuki (Satsuki) Kitaouji also known as the Yagyuu Four masculinizes the names of the four female characters

The lyrics of Otsuu-chan songs also known as the chome-chome songs (i.e: you’re father’s a -xx-, you’re mom’s a -xx- etc.) are collaborated by Hideaki Sorachi (The author of Gintama) and Akatsuki Yamatoya (Series composer of this anime) while Mikako Takahashi provides the permanent voice of Tsuu Terakado as an insert songs for the chome-chome related episode (Episode 6, 30, 56, 62, 75, 124 etc.)
Also, Mikako Takahashi DID the barking voice of Sadaharu making the Inugami as one of the Main characters of this anime
Gintoki Sakata’s name is based on Kintoki Sakata or Sakata no Kintoki (Kintarou) hence Kin means Gold/metal, so as Gin means Silver. Hence Gintama (Shortened form of Gin’iro no Tamashii – Silver Soul) and Kintama (Golden balls – hence a testicles)
There is a Parody of Saint Seiya in Episode 44 where Gintoki performs his Seiya’s Pegasus Ryuusei Ken while Hattori dons his Hyoga’s Diamond Dust
Bae Yong Joon AKA ‘Yon-sama’ in Japanese nickname, Korean’s most prolific actor, makes a cameo appearance at Episode 34 by his name ‘Gin-sama’
In Episode 122 Gintoki mentions an ‘FF’ word refers to the Final Fantasy Online or FFXI. The In-game Character of Madao or Taizou Hasegawa bears a striking resemblance of Cloud Strife, one of the Main Characters in Final Fantasy VII.
In the Same episode (122), there is a silhouette of Kenpachi Zaraki from BLEACH in the eyecatch
In episode 44, Shioh, one of the member of Hattori Zenzou’s Shinobi 5 who used the ninja art doping technique looks similar to the video game character “Duke Nukem”.
In episode 115, Taizo “Madao” Hasegawa is riding on a battlleship similar to the Imperial Japanese Navy Yamato battleship.
In episode 36, Chisato Okai, Mai Hagiwara, and Airi Suzuki from the J-pop girl band °C-ute made cameos in the karate dojo.
Episode 34 is a parody of Densha Otoko. The name “Eromes” is a play on the female lead in Densha Otoko, Hermes- only in this case “ero” is erotic and “mesu” is a female cat.
